This place is located on top of a hill, next to Fleurie and its official name is in fact « Au Mont ». The soil of Rochegrès is mainly made of pink granite. It is not very deep and contains slightly more clay than the soils of Carquelin and La Roche. Above all, this terroir is crossed by many quartz veins.

Vinification

Picked and sorted by hand, then de-stemmed, the grapes macerate slowly over the course of three or four weeks. Indigenous yeasts are used throughout the fermentation period, and extraction by means of both plunging and pumping over takes place on a regular basis.

Maturing and bottling

The wines are aged in our historic cellar for 10 months, a period spent in oak barrels, 100% of which are new. The oak used to make the barrels comes from the forests of Alliers, the Limousin and the Nivernais.

Tasting / Wine and food pairing

Opulent and generous, this vineyard selection is one of the best wines of the appellation. Its great complexity makes it the perfect match for a wide range of meats, cheeses and vegetarian dishes.

Conservation

The wine needs two or three years to reach its peak, and can then age comfortably for several decades.

The Vintage

The cold start to spring, which lasted until Mai, delayed budbreak, but the high temperatures that followed brought flowering forwards; some flowers were even burned by the extreme heat. July was particularly hot and sunny but, unlike in 2003, nights were cool. Unfortunately, August was both cold and rainy, threatening the health of the bunches. September didn't start off well, but came good with the return of enough sunshine to dry the berries. Picking began on 13 September. Although the wines of 2006 will never achieve the greatness of the 2005s, they are pretty wines with good concentration, showing great balance of alcohol, acidity and tannin.
