Features

The Grand Clos de Loyse is a monopoly parcel of 10 hectares. It is situated on the border between the granite slopes and the former bed of the Saône River. The Chardonnay vines are fed by the river's more recent sediments, and soil deposits that date back to Hercynian period lend them a gentle trace of minerality.

Vinification

Picked and then transported in small plastic cases, the grapes are pressed as soon as possible. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, which aids the preservation of the wine's minerality, purity of fruit and crisp acidity.

Maturing and bottling

Maturation takes place in stainless steel tanks over the course of several months. Bottling takes place at the start of the following summer.

Tasting / Wine and food pairing

This wine is so pure, fresh and mineral-driven that we recommend it as an apéritif, or as a match for shellfish and white fish. When paired with sushi, the wine's crisp acidity makes the match sing.

Conservation

The ‘Grand Clos de Loyse' white Beaujolais is a wine that is designed to be enjoyed in its youth.

The Vintage

After a prolonged winter, spring was cool and rainy. The cold weather threatened the annual vineyard cycle right up until the start of May. From that point onwards until the start of July, conditions for healthy vine growth were propitious: heat spikes helped to bring on vegetative growth, resulting in a slightly early flowering than usual and leading growers to expect generous yields. The weather during August - moderate sunshine, high degrees of diurnal temperature fluctuations and regular rainfall - led to poor fruit set, thereby curbing yields naturally. Sadly, these conditions also disturbed the ripening process. The harvest started on 18 September. The upshot is that 2004 is a classic vintage in terms of its early ripening, although yields were still relatively high. Quality was determined by the amount of work done to curb the vines' vigour and yield in order to avoid harvesting under-ripe grapes that would create dilute wines. This is a vintage with plenty of fruit and freshness, but perhaps not one for the long haul.
